Dakhla
Dakhla, between Lagoon and Ocean
- Nature
- Coastal
This self-guided tour introduces Dakhla, a long peninsula between lagoon, ocean and desert, through all of its great natural sites. The lagoon is Dakhla's great landscape: the White Dune, whose access often depends on the tide, Dragon Island, also called Herné Island, and PK25, an area known for water sports, are its landmarks. On the ocean side, Foum El Bouir faces the open Atlantic; to the south, Punta Sarga and Porto Rico Beach open wide views over the coast. In the desert, the Imlili Sebkha contrasts with the lagoon and the ocean: it should only be visited on a suitable excursion, with reliable transport and local knowledge of the tracks. Dragon Island is usually reached on an organised excursion, depending on lagoon conditions. Distances are covered by car: spread the tour over several days. Access to some sites depends on the tide, the wind and the state of the tracks: check before you set off.
