This self-guided tour brings together all the places open to visitors in Meknes, an imperial city whose medina and royal city have been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1996. In the medina, the Great Mosque is seen from the nearby lanes and the Bou Inania madrasa, a 14th-century Marinid college, can be visited with a ticket according to guidebooks (check on site that it is open). El Hedim Square links the medina to the imperial city: it brings together the Dar Jamai palace, now the National Museum of Music (closed on Tuesdays), and Bab Mansour, the ceremonial gate of the imperial city. Behind the gate, Lalla Aouda Square leads to the mosque of the same name, the Ambassadors' Pavilion and the Mausoleum of Moulay Ismail; Qara Prison, an underground site of the imperial city, is linked to the sultan's building works. The ramparts and Bab el-Khemis punctuate the fortifications; to the south, the Sahrij Souani basin lies next to the Heri es-Souani granaries, built to withstand a siege. Allow a long day on foot, or spread the tour over several days. Entry conditions should be checked on site for several places.
