Moulay Idriss Zerhoun
Volubilis and Moulay Idriss, from Rome to the Idrisids

This self-guided tour links two neighbouring places bound together by history: Volubilis, a Mauretanian then Roman city listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1997, and Moulay Idriss, the holy town that grew around the tomb of Idris I. At Volubilis, you explore the site, its forum, basilica and capitol, its great mosaic houses, then the Arch of Caracalla. You then reach Moulay Idriss, about three kilometres away: the great gate of the sanctuary of Idris I, then the Khiber and Tasga hills and their terraces. Allow half a day to a full day. Plan a taxi or a car between Volubilis and the town, and bring water: the ancient site has little shade.
