This self-guided tour introduces Taroudant, a town of the Souss known first for its walls, its gates, its souks and its medina. The historic gates punctuate the ramparts that surround the old town. Talmoklate and Assarag squares are at the heart of the town's trade; the medina keeps its lanes, souks and craft quarters, and the tanneries recall one of the town's skills. The kasbah and the old quarters are part of the fortified system that long protected Taroudant. The Claudio Bravo Palace, the estate of the Chilean hyperrealist painter, lies about eight kilometres north of the town: it is reached by car, and its opening hours and prices should be checked before you go. In town, everything is on foot. At the tanneries, stay in the permitted areas and respect the artisans at work.
